Helping the Helper

Knowing she might only have a few months to live, Nora* began the arduous process of finding placement for her animals. For years, she offered refuge to guinea pigs and bunnies, in her southern California home.

A couple of years ago, she received multiple diagnoses. In the past few months, her condition worsened. She needs oxygen, blacks out when feeding her rabbits, and is now partially blind.

Some “rescuers” told her they’d help her rabbits after she died.

Well, I want to tell you something. Let’s help her rabbits and guinea pigs NOW, so she can focus her time and energy on family and whatever time she has left.

And you can help!

Last month, 12 of Nora’s guinea pigs arrived and our animal care director, Meg, fostered all of them! Six went to rescues in Washington and five were adopted by a guinea pig lover in Petaluma. Sadly, one did pass away.

After those piggies found homes, we reached out for help with the rabbits and remaining guinea pigs. As many of the bunnies are not spayed and neutered, we knew it would be a challenge. But you know we are always up for a challenge!

But Friends of Unwanted Rabbits came through in a big way, offering to welcome 9 Flemish Giant bunnies into their foster homes…so long as we could help cover their spay and neuter costs.

How could we say no?!? A generous veterinarian, Dr. Tino Luehman, is donating much of her time and providing a discounted cost for each spay and neuter!

This past weekend, a volunteer drove 9 rabbits to Friends of Unwanted Rabbits and then 4 rabbits and 8 guinea pigs to Animal Place.

A special thank you to these rescues:

  • Friends of Unwanted Rabbits – took in 9 Flemish Giant rabbits
  • Vanellope Guinea Pig Sanctuary – took in 4 guinea pig girls
  • Binky Bops n Piggy Pops – took in a bonded pair of male guinea pigs
  • LA Guinea Pig Rescue – helping with 3 guinea pigs
