If you follow us on social media, you might have seen the news that one of our beloved birds, Malachite, passed away. He lived 7 years longer than he “should” have. As we mourn his loss, I invite you to help turn that grief into healing for some very special birds.
Malachite defied the odds, and so has every bird who will benefit from the Malachite Memorial fund.
Let me explain.
There are 27 sanctuary hens who are in immediate need of reproductive medical care to extend their lives. Yes, even hens need reproductive healthcare!
All it takes to provide a hen with a month’s worth of reproductive care is $16! That’s it.
Individuals like Patagonia, a hen you might have met virtually recently! Patagonia is just as strong-willed as Malachite was and she has beaten the odds as well. Like Malachite, Patagonia entered the world in an incubator instead of beneath her mom’s wings. Slated for egg production, she spent the next 2 years at a farm.
Patagonia’s value was in eggs produced and not in being given medical care. In two years, she laid nearly 600 eggs that were sold for human consumption. Patagonia never received care for her reproductive disease, even though the farm made $500 from the sale of her eggs.
The illness Patagonia suffers from is directly caused by laying an egg a day. To keep her healthy and extend her life, Patagonia needs to stop laying eggs.
Lucky for Patagonia and her friends, there are medications that can be given to stop them from laying eggs. Pretty cool, right? Instead of being at risk of euthanasia, Patagonia and her friends have a chance to live longer lives…will you make that happen?
Donate $100 or more and we will send you quarterly updates about the hen whose care you are sponsoring. Your gift of $100 will provide care to a hen for six months!
I want Patagonia to enjoy the same long life that Malachite did. He lived 7 years and with your support, we can provide Patagonia with the medication needed to give her that chance.
Each one of the hens who need this medical care are unique and amazing. Each one is suffering the terrible side effects of reproductive disease. What does their care look like now?
Some of these special-needs hens have large, swollen bellies. To relieve the pain and discomfort of that fluid build up, a needle is inserted into their abdomen for draining. While our caregiving team strives to make this as comfortable a procedure as possible, you can imagine how stressful it might be.
But the medication your donation buys will stop egg production and stop the fluid build up in their abdomens. It will stop or slow down cancerous masses. It may not cure every hen, but it will give them a fighting chance.
With your $50 gift, you provide individuals like Patagonia three months of reproductive care. We will email you a photo of your sponsored hen.
Malachite beat the odds with the support of people who cared. Donating to his memorial fund will help some of these incredible individuals also beat the odds. We think Patagonia and her flock-mates deserve it. Do you?
If you answer yes, please consider a donation – of any amount – to Malachite’s Memorial fund and give these hens a chance.
With compassion,
Jess Carroll
Executive Director
PS: Donate $100 or more and you will receive quarterly updates on your sponsored hen. You’ll provide her with six months of reproductive care!
